Thank you for visiting the Kiviranta website. We, the owners and developers of the property, would like to share some of our thoughts about Kiviranta with you.
We purchased this property in 2005 and operated a restaurant here from 2005 to 2012. During that time we had our offices onsite and fell in love with the land and the lake. After we closed the restaurant in 2012 we thought hard about what to do next with this special property. The answer has become Kiviranta.
We approached local (and world renowned) architect David Salmela about our dream to share this space with others. He immediately saw the opportunity to develop 8 homes in his signature modern style, to cluster them on the currently developed land so as to preserve the forest, and to position them so that each home has equal views of Lake Superior. We already loved the land and the lake. Now we love the Kiviranta project.
To the casual eye, David’s homes seem simple, clean and minimalist, but his designs are always more than they seem. He pays great attention to light and brings it in from all sides. He also designs homes that have quiet luxury and comfort. The kitchens meet the modern aesthetic but also provide pleasures of preparing meals with premium appliances and then serving them in gracious space. Each kitchen will have SubZero refrigerators, Wolf induction cooktops and ovens, two dishwashers, and other thoughtful additions to make kitchen work fun alone or fun to share. Heated slate floors are throughout the home, even in the bathrooms where they provide an extra pleasure when stepping out of the shower and picking up your towel from the heated towel rack. David’s homes are beautiful to live in, and at Kiviranta they have the added bonus of opening to views of Lake Superior and native forest. To quote the owner of another Salmela home “it is impossible to be unhappy in this space”.
Each home in the Kiviranta project will include shared ownership in approximately 30 acres of private trails through the forest. During spring, summer and fall some trails will be designated for hiking and biking. During winter they will be perfect for snowshoeing and others for cross country skiing.
Owners with an active love of the out-of-doors will appreciate the private trails as well as the easy access to Minnesota and City of Duluth hiking and biking trails. The North Shore Drive (Scenic Highway 61) is also a favorite of bicyclists. If you want to be on the water, the point at Kiviranta is a good launching place for kayaks and stand-up paddle boards. The Marina at Knife River (5+ miles) has berths for sailboats and power boats, and the self-launching site at McQuade Harbor (4 miles) is perfect for trailered boats. McQuade landing is always a busy place when the fishing is good on Lake Superior. Fishing is also good from the shore at Kiviranta, and stream fishing is excellent in the nearby Lester, French and Sucker rivers. (Palmer Creek on Kiviranta land is a designated trout stream, but it is a nursery stream and probably not good for fishing.) Downhill skiers will find Duluth’s Spirit Mountain with its lighted night skiing just 20 minutes away, a few miles further is Mont du Lac. If you drive north, Lutsen Mountain is about 90 minutes away and Canadian skiing about 3 hours away. Cross country skiing fans have many choices from Spirit Mountain and Lester Park in Duluth to world class Korkki Ski Trails only 10 minutes from Kiviranta.
For owners with more contemplative preferences, Kiviranta’s views of Lake Superior will provide daily pleasures and comforts that support working from home whether your business is business, or writing, or arts. All homes will be connected to high speed fiber optic for wifi and television.
Children have the best of all worlds, a private woods to roam and discover nature, a lakeshore for skipping rocks and great local school districts.
Kiviranta is 14 miles from the center of Duluth which features a rich mixture of amenities thanks to the area being home to universities and colleges and a large medical center. All those well-educated, sophisticated citizens help bring diverse choices to the community. Some of pleasures you will enjoy:
Chef-driven restaurants & cafes, as well as major chain restaurants.
Classical music with the Duluth Superior Symphony.
Indie music from local groups, several of which have won major recognition.
Music festivals including Blues Fest and Homegrown Music Festival.
Theater including Duluth Playhouse and Renegade Comedy.
Theater at the Universities and Colleges.
A vibrant local brewhouse and distillery scene.
Art galleries featuring local artists, again, many with major recognition.
Movies, including at Zeitgeist, the local arts movie house.
Minnesota Ballet offers professional performances and classes for all ages.
UMD opera and also the Lyric Opera of the North (LOON).
An International Airport as well as a bustling corporate business community.
Birdwatching, including at Hawk Ridge for the annual hawk migration.
Another advantage of location is that Duluth is a Regional Medical Center with quality care in all specialties.
No list of amenities would be complete without mentioning shopping, especially shopping for clothing that allows you to be stylish and comfortable in all weather. As the Scandinavians say “there is no bad weather, only bad clothes”. The specialty outdoor clothing stores and boutiques headquartered in Duluth make it easy to enjoy the four seasons.
Kiviranta is also all about making your life easier. The Lewis Group offers a full time caretaker who lives on the adjacent property. His role includes maintenance of exterior structures, tending to landscaping and trails, as well as snow removal. We also offer additional services for a fee: transportation to and from the airport, cleaning service as needed, grocery stocking as you need it. If you are a part time resident, it can be a wonderful perk to leave your home “used” and return to it clean and ready.
We are enjoying preparing Kiviranta as a premium living experience available as early as this coming Fall.
